Perhaps no one could have been more prejudiced against...
Perhaps no one could have been more prejudiced against what they thought Christian Science to be than I was. A friend asked us to call a Christian Science practitioner for our babe whom physicians said could not live because of arrested development. This we did, and the next morning the child's lower limbs, which had been pronounced paralyzed, were moving. It had slept and fed normally for the first time, with no expression of discomfort. My husband and I had planned a trip prior to this and we now took the child with us. Under the care of a practitioner the child's spine was completely healed. A condition of cholera infantum arose later; we did not get in touch with the practitioner in time and the child passed on, but the babe's first healing had been the means of bringing to me a glimpse of life in God, Spirit, and I was lifted up in this hour to the consciousness of man as "never born and never dying" (Science and Health, p. 258), but as an immortal idea of the loving Father-Mother God. Death has never since seemed real.
When people asked why I continued to be interested in Christian Science after my child had passed on, I could say truthfully that Science had not failed, but my ignorance of it had caused failure. Enlightenment had already shown me the divine Principle that could be applied to all my problems in life and I pressed on.
Later, when another child was born, I experienced no pain. The physician arrived just after the delivery and pronounced everything normal, even to my pulse and temperature. The next day I was up and around my room, then downstairs, and the following day, which was Wednesday, I walked a block to the electric car and climbed a long flight of stairs to the hall where our Christian Science church services were held. I had also attended on the Wednesday previous. On the tenth day I took a journey of a thousand miles without fatigue or harm to myself or the baby. This was over twenty-five years ago and no evil results were manifested, nor has illness of any nature kept me confined to my bed for longer than a day since then. Chronic headaches, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids have since been healed.
