Having studied Christian Science for some ten years, I...

Having studied Christian Science for some ten years, I wish to add my testimony to that of others who are rejoicing because of this healing truth.

Reared in an orthodox home in which the Bible was much loved, I early sought a knowledge of God and His protection. But as I studied I found more and more that the church did not seem to be healing the sick and casting out the demons of selfishness and sin as Jesus had done. I turned from one church to another, thinking the fault perhaps lay with the particular church, but none seemed able to supply the spiritual food for which I hungered. Giving my attention to the sciences and literature, I found in them nothing that was conclusive.

One day a friend offered me the use of the Christian Science textbook, but this offer I turned aside, explaining that I believed I understood what it taught, and that I could hardly agree. When the way became very dark, however, I sought my friend, secured the textbook, and slipped away to my room to study. For a week I critically read the chapters entitled "Prayer" and "Atonement and Eucharist." To my surprise I found that I not only did not disagree, but frequently was relieved when I found something which was unquestionably logical. Often I asserted, "That is the truth." Returning to the first page of the Preface, I pondered these words (p. vii): "The time for thinkers has come. Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity. Contentment with the past and the cold conventionality of materialism are crumbling away. Ignorance of God is no longer the stepping-stone to faith. The only guarantee of obedience is a right apprehension of Him whom to know aright is Life eternal."
