Oberländisches Volksblatt

The writer of the article "Church Review" in the Oberländisches Volksblatt says that there is much controversy about the character of Mary Baker Eddy, the Founder of Christian Science, but that the truth of all that has been said about her lies somewhere on middle ground.

It is possible today to build a true picture of the life of Mary Baker Eddy. Her autobiography, "Retrospection and Introspection," is not yet available in German, but there are two other books: "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur, and "Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Portrait" by Rev. Lyman P. Powell.

In order to be right about a historial person one should hear not just from the opponents but from the friends as well. How would Luther and Zwingli and many other friends of mankind have fared if only their opponents had been heard from? Today no one can deny that the lives of thousands of people have been made harmonious through Mrs. Eddy's work. And the Master of us all, Christ Jesus, said—and this applies quite as much to today—"By their fruits ye shall know them."
