One Divine Dictator

In that great spiritual record, the Bible, we find many instances of the obstinate desire of mortals to be ruled only by material beliefs, and of their resistance to spiritual guidance. From earliest times, the desires of the people seemed to be for a strong ruler, for a strong government which would assure them security and glory. Prophets endeavored to inspire their people with a vision of the true representative of God, the Messiah, as one who is gentle and meek, bringing not human domination, but Spirit's dominion, and ruling by love alone. When Christ Jesus, the most Godlike of men, attempted to convince the people that the looked-for Messiah was the Christ, expressing God's divine government, rather than a great human leader, he was condemned and crucified as an impostor.

Today there is a wide resurgence of this age-old belief in personal power as opposed to divine power, and it is notably expressed in the absolute powers given to the heads of several countries. Dismayed by the collapse of old systems, peoples have in desperation demanded strong human leaders—the exemplification of their own desires. In many cases they have found them.

But spiritual growth demands recognition of God as the all-powerful savior, not only from economic disaster, but from all other forms of human discord, including sin, disease, and death. And we have today what earlier ages did not have—Christian Science, with its scientific explication of the laws of God's government of man and the universe. The fact that the revelation of Christian Science came to its Discoverer, Mary Baker Eddy, in our times makes it apparent that this age was ready for the reception of this final revelation and advanced step in spiritual growth. Truth has ever been revealed to great spiritual leaders when conditions were divinely prepared for the germination and propagation of the revelation. It is heartening to know that in these times there is an active nucleus of spiritually enlightened thought, awakened through our Leader's wisdom, to hold firmly to the ideal of infinite divine authority, which is above the human.
