The Meaning of Spirituality
Any uncertainty as to the meaning of spirituality and any possible lack of interest in it disappear naturally through the understanding of Christian Science. Spirituality is the quality of thought that expresses the nature of God, all-inclusive Spirit; and through Christian Science it is found to be a quality which satisfies every true human aspiration—aspiration after understanding, strength, health, usefulness, happy relationships, beauty, enduring satisfaction—all that can correctly be considered good.
That this quality is available for every human being is the clear teaching of Christian Science; and Science is explicit in showing how it is to be attained. It is to be attained by understanding God aright and by consecrated endeavor to let His nature be manifested in one's present experience.
Christian Science is altogether definite regarding the nature of God. One of its terms for Him, in accordance with the Scriptural teaching, is Love. Therefore in individual experience, to be more loving, in the true, unselfish, and impartial sense, is to become more spiritual or Godlike, and to attain more of the dominion which invariably appears with spirituality. In this respect alone the watchful student sees that daily, and many times daily, he has opportunity for growth in spirituality. Turning aside from any temptation to resent or hate, and recognizing, rather, that God, infinite Love, is the only real presence, and therefore that the expression of Love in one's own experience is natural and practical and able to meet every need—this definitely is evidence of the appearing of spirituality, and therefore of the appearing of peace and dominion.
