I feel that it is high time to express my gratitude through the channels provided by our dear Leader for at least a part of the blessings I have received through the study and application of Christian Science, and through the help of practitioners.
When I was taken sick and the doctor did not help me I grew discouraged, as I was having hemorrhages and was growing weaker every day. I asked my husband for a change of doctors, but he said he would get a neighbor instead who was a Christian Science practitioner. I consented reluctantly. She came and talked with me a few minutes and gave me a treatment. I remember her quoting Mrs. Eddy's words, "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself" (Science and Health, p. 385). She left a Sentinel and requested that I read it. In less than a week I was entirely healed, but the healing came so gently that I did not give praise where praise was due. A year later we had Christian Science treatment when a son was born, and the birth was almost painless. Later our baby had worm convulsions. First we called a doctor; then later the baby was completely healed through Christian Science.
I did not study faithfully, and a few years later my son and I were suddenly left to make our own way. I learned then that I must get to work in earnest; that I must rely wholly on Christian Science, as I had learned enough to know that the man created in God's own image and likeness never dies. It was only matter which had passed from sight. I left the farm and moved to town, where I had the privilege of attending church, and my son of attending the Sunday school. There I united with the Christian Science Society, and later on had the blessed privilege of membership in The Mother Church.
