From birth I suffered from spinal trouble, never being...
From birth I suffered from spinal trouble, never being long out of some kind of cast; added to this, heart trouble was thought to have been inherited. When my mother passed on suddenly, I seemed lost, not knowing the truth. In 1911 there came into our lives a new mother who was a Christian Scientist. We all loved her, and our two little girls were happy with her. In 1916 she presented me with a copy of Science and Health. I read this book and liked it very much. When I had an accident in the fall of 1919 and broke my back, we called in specialists, who said the back was tubercular. As the doctors left my room to have a consultation I heard one say, "Poor dear, she is cheerful, but she has to go." I felt as though I were in a canoe in the middle of the ocean. Needless to say, I turned to my textbook. My mother was not near to help me, and I knew nothing of practitioners or the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, but after four years of constant study I received my complete healing, and was happy to be able to walk and to help others.
I have had some very trying times since, and I am very thankful for the work done by a faithful practitioner when I have had to struggle with "the last enemy." I always think at such times of climbing a mountain, when we look up and see what seem to be stumbling blocks ahead; but after we climb over them we find that they were steppingstones to a higher outlook. On page 66 of Science and Health our dear Leader tells us, "Trials are proofs of God's care;" and on page 494 she says, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."
I am thankful for Christ Jesus and for Mary Baker Eddy; thankful that I have been privileged to be active in the healing work; that my husband is privileged in doing his part in the church and in advancing the Cause of Christian Science; that our home and the homes of our three children are blessed with an understanding of God's presence. Our little grandchildren demonstrate the truth, and we have learned a great deal from their loving faith in God. We are thankful for the Sunday schools throughout the world, and for the loving teachers who teach the little ones to live and demonstrate Christian Science at such an early age.
