My first knowledge of Christian Science came from reading...

My first knowledge of Christian Science came from reading articles in the Christian Science Sentinel, sent me by my wife. I was in a little mining camp, which was many miles from the railroad, and in which anything to read was eagerly seized upon and usually read over and over again. I gave no particular thought to the healing side of this Science, as I was, so I thought, in no particular need of it. However, that winter, after I came down from the mountains and we established our home in the city, my wife and I began attending the Christian Science church, and as our interest grew and we began to read and study daily the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, I found, as many another has found, that I did need the healing, not necessarily for bodily ills, but for many other ills such as intolerance, self-pity, temper, false pride, and so forth.

The first application of this truth for a physical difficulty was the realization of the powerlessness of matter, that there could be no sensation in matter, no accidents in divine Mind, no results from any such seeming condition, for there is but one power and that one infinite and absolute. In taking a kettle off the stove I had spilled some boiling water on my foot. I endeavored instantly to realize God's protecting care, and the pain ceased immediately. I refused to make any examination, but went about as usual during the evening; and upon retiring I found no indication of burn or scald, except a slight redness of the skin, which had all disappeared by morning.

As the years passed, the healings in our family were many. The needs of a growing family seemed to demand so much of my time that I thought I could not spare the time to read the Lesson-Sermon daily—that I would try to read it in the evening. The result was that sometimes a week would go by without my reading it. As may be expected, this was not good and led me to a testing time some eight years ago, when I came under an attack of rheumatism. After trying vainly to overcome this difficulty through my own efforts and understanding, I asked for the services of a practitioner. The healing was slow, but some gain was noted from the first; and in the course of several months the healing was complete and the trouble has not returned in any way since. I am indeed grateful for the healing truth. I am also grateful that this experience taught me the necessity of constant daily study, and the fact that as we apply what we learn from this study, we gain in grace and physical well-being.
