In 1916 I was divinely led to take up the study of Christian Science, and for this I am very grateful. I knew absolutely nothing about this Science at the time. From childhood I was always being treated for some illness; and as I grew to womanhood conditions were not bettered, but became worse. Then after my marriage and the coming of children, these ills became very serious and I prayed many times that I might die, for I felt that I was a great burden to my husband. There were very few weeks throughout a year that I did not spend three or four days in bed and sometimes weeks without being able to get up.
During this time I knew that the physicians were very sincere in their efforts to help me. In 1916 a physician said there was nothing more to be done; that we could try another operation, but I should never come out of the ether. So I left him, and on my way home I was very busy wondering what I should do. Then I remembered that our little town had dedicated a new library a few months before and at that time I had looked over the various books on the shelves and had seen one called Science and Health. I had thought, Why, here is a new doctor book. So I stopped at the library and procured the book. I took it home and turned to the contents page to find what it could tell me about heart trouble, for this was my most serious trouble, although the doctor said that not one organ of my body was functioning normally.
