Seven years before I became a student of Christian Science...
Seven years before I became a student of Christian Science and had my first healing, I became interested in it because of a friend's explanation of its views on life, and I decided to purchase Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and investigate its teachings. As I read the book through I was disappointed because of its seemingly incomprehensible statements about God and man; and when I finished it I declared, "I can't remember anything I've learned from this except that God is good and good is God—or the only power." That seemed a very small thought to have gleaned from the reading of an entire book, but that truth of God's goodness has changed the whole current of my life.
After this reading, for seven years the book was not again opened. During that time I underwent several minor surgical operations and one serious one. As a result of the latter I was left with a constant and almost unendurable pain that continued for about a year. I had become very much emaciated, could not rest day or night, and I daily lost ground until one night I collapsed and became unconscious. A specialist was summoned who pronounced the case anemia. As my demise was expected momentarily, all of my near-by relatives were sent for.
A few days previous to this collapse I had remarked to a student of Christian Science that if the physician could not stop the pain, I was going to try Science. Therefore, when I became unconscious, she appealed to my family to have an experienced Christian Science practitioner work for me. Knowing nothing of this Science, they declined to do this, so she went home and, although only a beginner in Science herself, she began to work for me to the best of her ability. When, three days later, I became suddenly conscious it was with the conviction that if I was ever to be healed it would be through Christian Science, as I knew medicine and surgery had failed.
