I desire to express my gratitude for the Science of Christianity,...
I desire to express my gratitude for the Science of Christianity, as revealed by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. Since my return to Australia, after years spent in the World War, I have had the comfort of this Science, and through its teachings I have proved its entire availability in overcoming the problems which have presented themselves. When correctly applied, I have found it a continuous help to meet all my needs. My wife introduced Christian Science to me some eleven years ago, and upon reading Science and Health I perceived something of the eternal truth there given to us.
On one occasion I was cycling with my six-year-old son. The boy was sitting on the bar in front of me when suddenly, while we were travelling down an incline at a fair speed, his foot became caught in the spokes of the front wheel. This caused a severe crash on a hard road. As I strove to lift my thought above an intense sense of fear, the first thought that came to me was, "God is Love." I urged the little boy to declare the truth, for at the time I was thrown some distance from him, and he was still caught in the wheel. With difficulty I was enabled to rise and go to him. I continued to declare the truth of God's ever-present love. My knee appeared rather alarming, but I looked away from this, as I had to comfort the little boy. Presently a motor lorry came along and took us to our home. We were both very much bruised and cut, with swollen knees, and suffering from shock, but we unswervingly continued our work in Christian Science, knowing that God is ever present and governing us. Next day the boy was all right, and I did not lose one moment from my business. For this proof of God's protecting power through the healing truth of Christian Science I am most grateful.
Life would be a blank to me were it not for these teachings which are my daily help. Both my wife and I are most grateful for membership in The Mother Church. Living in the country, about three hundred miles from a Christian Science church, I cannot express the joy and the solace it is to us to receive the Christian Science literature regularly, with its uplifting and healing articles. Of course, the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly are a continual help in our home, also my looking away from a material sense of things, and seeing only God and His idea. What a gift our God-inspired Leader has given to the world!—Joseph E. Baker, Gilgandra, New South Wales, Australia.
