In his reply to a correspondent in your November 16 issue a doctor mistakenly infers that Christian Scientists attempt to treat disease by forgetting or ignoring it. The truth is that Christian Science heals disease and other disturbed conditions, physical and moral, through the very positive and health-giving process of going to the root of the cause of those conditions, and displacing the discordant mental impression which gave rise to inharmony. That Christian Science is a safe and dependable system of healing is proved by its fruits in every community during the past half century.
With so much said in newspapers and over the radio about sickness, there is really no other way to "forget" to be sick than by holding fast to man's God-given ideal of spontaneous health and well-being. Health and harmony become certain and natural only in proportion as they are seen to be spiritual, not physical and material. Assuredly it is not God who sends or permits sickness, and it is being proved every day that sickness can be healed by bringing human thought into accord with the infinity and ever-presence of good. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, puts this very clearly when she writes on pages 124 and 125 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "The elements and functions of the physical body and of the physical world will change as mortal mind changes its beliefs." "Moral conditions will be found always harmonious and health-giving. Neither organic inaction nor overaction is beyond God's control."
