Some years ago, after a period of deep grief and great anxiety, I was very much depressed. I had quite lost heart. My resistance was gone and my health began to fail. I would not listen to the advice given me by others, but merely wanted to die. At length I became so ill that it seemed as if I should die. The doctor said that I had a bad case of anaemia, a disease that was common in our family, and that my condition was exceedingly serious.

A friend of mine had some time previously kindly taken me to see a Christian Science practitioner, to whom I then listened indifferently and reluctantly. This good practitioner now came and stayed with me, taking care of me and working for me daily. Through this Christian Science treatment and talks with her the light of Truth began to stream little by little into my thought. I became tranquil, and gradually these new, invigorating ideas gave me fresh courage. In a little while, to the astonishment of my family, I was well again and strong enough to take up energetically the solution of my problems. Never since I have known of Christian Science has a similar hopelessness got the better of me, though the darkness has often seemed impenetrable. Through the understanding of this wonderful religion, to which I owe a great debt of gratitude, I have gained life, serenity, and a sacred sense of divine protection.
