Security in Divine Law

Recently a student of Christian Science gained a very helpful lesson while standing in a safety zone, waiting for a streetcar. Although automobiles were rushing by, he felt secure when walking to and fro in that limited safety zone because he was protected by the traffic law. This experience, it seems, is somewhat analogous to that of a student who is sincerely endeavoring to practice Christian Science, for the understanding of Truth gives him assurance of safety through obedience to divine law while he is passing through the maze of human experiences.

The desire for spiritual thinking and living brings one naturally under the protection of the law of Spirit. We have the Psalmist's assurance, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Just as one feels safe while obeying the traffic rules by standing within the safety zone as he waits for a streetcar, so the student in Christian Science feels secure when he remains steadfast in what might metaphorically be called the safety zone of divine law while gaining a better understanding of Deity.

Many are the ways in which evil would tempt us through disobedience to deprive ourselves of the protection of divine law. One of the ways in which error works is exemplified in the following experience. One who had been healed of many discordant conditions through the study and application of the teachings of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," desired to express his gratitude for the many blessings received by trying to show others how to rise out of their difficulties. But, on account of an impulsive and impetuous nature and lack of tact in presenting the healing truths of Christian Science, he often offended those whom he desired to help. Because of a beginner's unenlightened zeal he was unable to discern that "the best sermon ever preached is Truth practised and demonstrated by the destruction of sin, sickness, and death," as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 201). Disappointed in his unsuccessful effort to "preach" to others, he became discouraged and tried to step outside the protection of Christian Science. But God, divine Love, the Principle of Christian Science, drew him back before he had wandered far, and in due time the prodigal was returned to the safety zone of obedience to divine law. Chastened and meek, he was welcomed home. The Father, loving him, bestowed on him the robe of a more enlightened consciousness and the jewel of humility, and shod his feet with a more steadfast understanding that of his own self he could do nothing. The experience brought to him a clearer realization of Paul's declaration, "If a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself."
