In a recent issue of the Press appeared a summarized report of a sermon. At the conclusion of the sermon the clergyman quoted an injunction that our Master, Christ Jesus, lays upon us all: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." To carry out this imperative command is the aim of every true Christian Scientist.

Christ Jesus, after due instructions to his disciples, commanded them to preach the gospel and to heal the sick. Following the example of their Master, they both preached and healed with good results. And Paul, at a later date, accomplished healings along with his preaching. Jesus must have fully realized the importance and necessity of healing, for the four Gospels are full of accounts of the multitude of healings which Jesus performed. He also realized that most of the Jews were but partially ready for the things of Spirit, and he did his healing as a first step towards freeing the thought of the people from sin, sickness, and even death.

And so today Christian Scientists are following the leadership of Christ Jesus in freeing humanity from the ills of the flesh, and in awakening the dormant understanding to a greater need of the things of Spirit. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, realized the value of health of both body and mind when she said in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 478), "That body is most harmonious in which the discharge of the natural functions is least noticeable; " and again (p. 383), "The Christian Scientist takes the best care of his body when he leaves it most out of his thought." A healing in Christian Science never leaves an individual just where he was before the healing took place. He has been uplifted spiritually, stimulated by the desire to become a better man, to render greater service to his God and to his brother men. And thus is he benefited physically, morally, and spiritually. Spirituality is never acquired through admitting the reality or necessity of discordant conditions, but rather through knowing and understanding that only good is real, only good emanates from God. That protection from error, whatever its seeming nature may be, should be earnestly sought is clearly indicated by the following words of Christ Jesus: "I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil."
