God's Help Needed

[Written Especially for Young People]

A MODERN translator gives the thirtieth verse of the twenty-second chapter of II Samuel thus: "By thy help I can face a troop, by God's help I can leap a wall." We hope that none of us will be called upon to face a troop of soldiers, but all boys and girls, men and women, face troops of another kind daily.

These troops are made up of the lies of so-called mortal mind, false fears and temptations. Generally, even the young student of Christian Science recognizes sickness as an enemy to be overcome. If wise, when faced by this enemy he obeys Mrs. Eddy's counsel in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 417): "Maintain the facts of Christian Science,—that Spirit is God, and therefore cannot be sick; that what is termed matter cannot be sick; that all causation is Mind, acting through spiritual law. Then hold your ground with the unshaken understanding of Truth and Love, and you will win."

But sometimes these opposing troops are not so easily recognized. For instance, they may pretend to be friendly and helpful suggestions that we are not going to be liked by desirable friends unless we lower our Christian Science standards a little and do as other people do, others who perhaps know practically nothing about God and how to serve Him. These lies hint that we are really missing a great deal, or that this or that error is harmless. But the Christian Scientist knows that no error is harmless, and that only that which is good can bring us joy, satisfaction, and accomplishment. By thoughts which reflect Love, Mind, intelligence, all errors that may come trooping toward human consciousness can be faced, resisted, and destroyed.
