Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

France.

In May the Club du Faubourg held a popular debate concerning present-day healers. The second part of the program was headed: "Christian Science before the Bar." The physician presiding opened the subject of Christian Science by the simple statement, "Christian Science is a religion." He then read from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 410), "Christian scientific practice begins with Christ's keynote of harmony, 'Be not afraid!' " Then, to show how Christian Scientists get rid of fear, the speaker gave a short but comprehensive resume of the doctrine of Christian Science concerning one supreme power which is absolute good, and man as the emanation of that power. Therefore, he continued, nothing can be inherently wrong with man, and men can shut out all evil and dwell in security by recognizing man's unity with his source. The healings of Christian Science were spoken of as undeniable and widespread, not only in America but all over the world, including France. It was stated that Mrs. Eddy, the Founder of Christian Science, has written many books, but that Science and Health is the full exposition of her doctrine.

In conclusion, the physician declared that "as Christian Science uses only mental, or rather, spiritual means, it has nothing to do with material remedies." This statement placed Christian Science at once above and outside of the doctors' debate. A general tendency was noted in this meeting, as in the press at present, to question the medical monopoly.
