Working with God

One day as a student of Christian Science was working in her garden, a friend of hers, a minister, came along, and in the course of conversation remarked that if rain did not come soon things could not continue to survive. "But we are promised 'the latter rain,'" she answered. Her friend did not reply for a moment; then—"It is wonderful to have faith," he said, and took his way on down the street.

This gave the student much to ponder. Yes, she thought, it is wonderful to have faith, but the Scripture states that "faith without works is dead." She saw that faith alone was not enough: there was work to be done. This work Mrs. Eddy indicates where she writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 23), "Faith, advanced to spiritual understanding, is the evidence gained from Spirit, which rebukes sin of every kind and establishes the claims of God."

The Bible is replete with God's promises of good unto all generations, and it is our work to recognize and lay hold on them; to advance our faith to spiritual understanding; to let "the claims of God" be established in our own daily experience and for the benefit of all mankind. To do this, we must turn away from the material evidence that would testify to lack of any good, whether of health, happiness, or supply, and hold our thought steadfastly to "the evidence gained from Spirit," which can reveal only an abundance of every good thing needful to God's children.
