Right Comparison

Though we may not always be aware of the fact, upon examination we find that we are constantly drawing comparisons, looking from one mental picture to another, linking together similarities, measuring differences. Indeed, from a mortal standpoint this would seem to be the only way of setting up a standard of values, although by selecting, weighing, and classifying, mortals have sought in vain to establish stability in an ever shifting sea of supposition. In the light of Christian Science, however, we recognize in this process of testing mankind's ceaseless search for true substance.

In the Bible we find these words: "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual." We find that the verb "to compare," according to its Latin derivation, means "equal to another," com or cum meaning "with" and par meaning "equal." We then begin to realize how we have been duped by mortal mind into believing that as a result of comparing one material concept with another we shall be helped to gain a truer sense of values. We have been tempted to believe that lessening degrees of imperfection lead upward to perfection. But how can any number of material postulates lead anywhere but in a futile circle? Christian Scientists are aware of the fallacy of material reckoning, and when error uses this method of approach they should turn at once to divine Principle, in the light of which all false claims are exposed and destroyed.

In considering the question of making true comparisons, it may be helpful to draw a parallel, taking the beauty of colors. When, for example, blue and green are placed in juxtaposition, the blue is bluer in our sight and the green more intense than when each stands alone. So ideas of God, ever giving to one another, enhance their individuality, and so glorify their eternal source.
