As reported in the Gazette, a local rector speaks in very pessimistic terms of present-day "churchmanship."

Christian Science is named as one of the crank religions "sprung up about the church," and is likened to a worthless sucker going off from a neglected "standard rose."

For the benefit of your readers, allow me to give the definition of "Church" as understood in the religion of Christian Science. It is to be found on page 583 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and reads: "The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle. The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from materialbeliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick."
