Through the understanding and application of Christian Science, after the doctors had said I could not live, I was regenerated and transformed from a sick, unhappy, discouraged business man ready to end all earthly existence, into a well and happy man with a life of activity, peace, and joy, free from fear and discouragement. When a baby I was so sickly and frail that I had to be carried on a pillow for months. I was also delicate and sickly all my boyhood days, and was compelled to give up my college education at the end of the first year.

At that time the physician advised a change of climate; so for the next three years I traveled over most of the United States and Canada, but found little or no relief. I visited the best known mineral springs and health resorts in the country and tried various methods of healing. I often resorted to a powder in order to get sleep, and have walked the streets at night seeking relief from suffering, fear, and worry.

When a boy, I was kicked on the side of the head by a horse, and for years had suffered with ear trouble, colds, and congestion in my head which was laid to this accident, as the drum of one ear was broken. I also suffered from stomach trouble, heart affliction, catarrh, throat trouble, chronic constipation, and cold night sweats, which weakened me until I had nervous prostration and collapsed in my place of business and was carried home unconscious. After six weeks in bed and two months at a health resort, my physician said it would probably mean death to go back East then, and advised me to spend some time on a ranch in western Texas. While there I first heard of Christian Science through a letter from home advising me that a friend of mine had been healed in Christian Science. After about four months I returned to my business little improved, and it was only a short time until I was just as ill as ever, when this friend appeared on the scene and tried to show me how this healing truth would bring me into my rightful heritage and make me free, well, and happy; but I was not ready to accept it.
