"Satisfied ... with thy likeness"

The words of the Psalmist, "As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness," voice the aspiration of every genuine Christian Scientist. Christian Science has revealed to him the real man as the image of God, shown him that his true selfhood is that image; and with this ideal before him he will be satisfied only when he fully realizes it.

What then is the nature of man, the image of God? In reply one might ask, by way of explanation, What relationship does an image in a mirror bear to the original before the mirror? It resembles the original in every way. So does man, God's image, resemble his creator or cause, God. In other words, man is the complete reflection of God. This means that man is perfect; that he expresses only good; that he manifests all the qualities of perfect Mind.

But what of evil? What of the imperfection which seems to present itself in human experience? Christian Science asks in reply, Is evil to be found in perfect Mind or in man, the reflection of perfect Mind? The answer is, No. Since God, perfect Mind, is infinite, all-inclusive, evil and imperfection can have no true existence; they cannot be real. Christian Science declares that evil has only a supposititious existence, is but part of the dream that life and intelligence are in matter. It is from this dream that mortals must awake. But not until Christian Science comes to one with its revelation of the true nature of God and man and one learns of the perfection of God and of his true spiritual selfhood, does he see the way out of the dream and apprehend that when the full awakening shall have taken place complete satisfaction will be his.
