Your issue of October 6 carries some statements in regard to Mrs. Eddy and Christian Science which require correction.

Christian Science is the same religion practiced by Jesus, the disciples, and the prophets. That it is the religion of Christ Jesus is proved by the way its followers are meeting with success the tests our Master required when he said: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast our devils; ... and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

In answer to the charge that Christian Science denies the incarnation of Christ Jesus, allow me to quote the following from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 332): "Jesus was the son of a virgin. He was appointed to speak God's word and to appear to mortals in such a form of humanity as they could understand as well as perceive. Mary's conception of him was spiritual, for only purity could reflect Truth and Love, which were plainly incarnate in the good and pure Christ Jesus. He expressed the highest type of divinity, which a fleshly form could express in that age."

Mrs. Eddy was the child of devout Christian parents, and was from early childhood an earnest student of the Scriptures. She spent much time in prayer and admonished her students to follow her "only so far as she follows Christ" (Message to The Mother Church for 1902, p. 4). The accusation that she was a demon-controlled woman is the same in essence as the charge made against Jesus by the Pharisees when they said: "This fellow doth cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils."

A religion that is reforming sinners and restoring thousands to health and happiness is not a delusion of the devil. It is a religion whose adherents are reaping the reward of having accepted the invitation of Jesus when he said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

Our critic might profitably ponder the advice of Gamaliel in Acts: "Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: but if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God."
