When I Pray

God be near me when I pray,
Keep all ills and doubts away,
Fill my thoughts with peace and love
Gentle, heavenly, from above;
Free from taint of earth and fear
Be Thou, God, so very near.

When I look with grateful heart,
Grace and peace Thou dost impart;
Joy and light in Thee I find,
All the attributes of Mind;
Thy abundance, more and more,
Freely showered from Thy store.

God is near me when I pray,
This He shows in every way.
When the calm of peace comes in,
When surcease is found from sin,
When we feel true friendship dear,
Then we know that God is near.
