When Christian Science was first brought to my attention...
When Christian Science was first brought to my attention I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. One Wednesday evening a friend insisted that I go with her to a Christian Science testimony meeting. She was not a Scientist, but had heard that people had been healed by reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and had derived much benefit from attending the meetings. On entering the church I was impressed by the orderliness of the service and the testimonies. The following Sunday I attended the service alone, but as usual, when alone, I became nervous and had a spell of coughing which was very annoying. After that I always sat on an end seat so that I could get out quickly. One Sunday morning, on entering the church, I felt a desire to cough, but the thought came to me, Why, you haven't come here to annoy, but to learn more about God. I took a seat in the middle of the pew and was healed of the cough at that service.
At this time I had been suffering for many months from an inflamed thumb on my left hand, and had lost two nails. That too was healed in a short time. The nervous condition was slow to yield, but through the love and encouragement expressed by the practitioner I soon discovered that I was holding resentment towards one who I felt had done me a great wrong. One by one, resentment, sorrow, bitterness, self-pity, and quick temper were routed out, and more love was poured into consciousness by reading from our Leader's works and attending all services regularly; and I found myself free.
Since then I have had many proofs of God's care and protection, all made possible by Mrs. Eddy's love for God and man.
