Preparation for the Lectures

The glad tidings that a Christian Science lecture is to be given in any locality should be received with joyous expectation. This occasion will be an uplifting experience both for the individual and for the community. The importance of a Christian Science lecture cannot be overestimated, since it sets forth the truth that heals mankind. It is therefore the joyous privilege of Christian Scientists to prepare their thoughts for the glad message which the lecture conveys, and thus they will be furthering its fruitfulness to humanity. This mental preparation in which all should share is an important, necessary work preceding a lecture.

There are many ways in which individual Scientists can prepare for the spiritual feast imparted through the lecture—ways and means whereby all can contribute to the success of every lecture on Christian Science throughout the world. First of all, we must realize that the church is giving the lecture, so that the occasion is a happy one in which to gain a clearer concept of Church, as defined in part by Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 583): "The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine principle." This understanding of the real Church is a firm foundation on which to prepare for the lecture, a rock of defense against which the storms of antagonism and the floods of opposition beat in vain.

From this it follows that the mental work of every member of the church, as a part of the whole, is indispensable, just as each brick is needed, is indeed indispensable, for the completion of a house. No building would be complete if some of the necessary bricks were missing; nor could the sun be reflected fully unless every ray of light were doing its share in shining.
