Christian Science came to me at a time when I was without hope of ever being free from attacks of asthma. A copy of the Christian Science Sentinel was given to me to read, and I was attracted by the testimonies of healing. They had a different ring from testimonies that I had read elsewhere—they sounded genuine and inspired by a different motive. I was invited to attend a Christian Science service, and here it was that I experienced that inward something which a number of years of study of Christian Science has unfolded in my consciousness as Immanuel, or "God with us."

My first healing—of the use of profanity—came at once and unexpectedly. My sufferings had been accepted as placed upon me by God because I was a sinner. Many times I had taken into account my shortcomings with the hope that, through some means, God would heal me. My efforts at living a better life seemed hopeless, especially in ridding myself of the use of profanity. So the instantaneous healing of this, with no effort on my part, was very wonderful to me, and I felt sure that the power that could accomplish this could certainly heal me physically.

Almost at once, following this healing, however, I was plunged into more physical suffering than I had ever experienced before. All that practitioners did—and I had much help from them—and all that I did through earnest study and effort to put into practice the truths of Christian Science, seemed of no avail. In one year I had lost about forty pounds in weight. I had also lost much time from work, but I am grateful to say that I had not lost that something which I first glimpsed in Christian Science, and which sustained me through this trying experience.
