Southwestern Times

I was much interested in the report of the Apostolic church sermon published in your issue of January 6, but while appreciating the kindly references to Mrs. Eddy and her work, I shall be glad if you will allow me space to refute the statement that "Mrs. Eddy has incorporated into her system many false doctrines. For example, there is no such thing as sin, etc."

Mrs. Eddy never denied that sin claims to exist in mortal mind or the thinking of mortals, the "carnal mind," which St. Paul in the epistle to the Romans tells us is "enmity against God." She taught her students how to destroy sin by overcoming the suggestions of mortal mind. Christian Science certainly teaches the unreality of sin, but discussing the question in her book "Unity of Good" (p. 1), she says, "Perhaps no doctrine of Christian Science rouses so much natural doubt and questioning as this, that God knows no such thing as sin," and the Christian Scientist does not merely accept the statement that sin is unreal; he has to prove it in his own experience.

It is one of the great features of Christian Science that the student is not merely told to believe, but is urged to study and understand the truth; and as he gets understanding, he is able to overcome not only sin, but sickness and every kind of trouble also. The test of this Science is in its results. The healing accomplished is surely evidence as to whether it has incorporated in it false doctrines or not. Christian Science churches and societies hold weekly open meetings, at which can be heard testimonies by Christian Science students, giving thanks for the healing of sickness and sin, and every week and every month in The Christian Science Journal, the Sentinel, and the Herald are written testimonies, verified before Publication.
