The War That Ends Wars
IMMEDIATELY following the signing of the Armistice sixteen years ago it was freely predicted that never again would there be a major conflict between nations. It was honestly believed by most men that the world had suffered so severely that it had learned the value and necessity of being guided by reason and justice instead of being swayed and stampeded by fear, silly sentiment, selfishness, greed, and blind passion. But the widespread talk about war and the increasing expenditures for armaments, together with the all too general sense of tension, fear, and suspicion now prevalent, push home the conviction that human warfare does not end war, but foments further wars.
There is, however, a war which will put an end to wars. It does not entail suffering and grief, but obliterates them, for all who take part in this war are enlisted under the banner of "The Prince of Peace" and are united in singing the joyous marching song, "Onward, Christian soldiers." Although most of the combatant groups in the World War were known as Christian nations, this should not be construed as implying that the teachings of Christ Jesus were found impotent at that time. Rather does it show that these redeeming and protective teachings were not comprehended, accepted, and utilized as they should have been.
In her restatement of Christ Jesus' precepts in "Science and Health with Key tot the Scriptures" and in her reinstatement of his practice, Mary Baker Eddy has pointed the way out of all human perplexities and fears, doubts and discords, confusion and conflict. Indeed, the way of Christian Science is the straight path to heaven, harmony, and life eternal, which was blazed by the Way-shower. On page 450 of Science and Health we find this pertinent passage: "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good. Sickness to him is no less a temptation than is sin, and he heals them both by understanding God's power over them." The battle ground of the war which will end all strife and discord is the human consciousness, and the battle is between good and evil, Truth and error, Love and hate, Spirit and material belief. The question, "On which side are we aligned?" must be faced and answered by each individual; and upon our answer depend our health, happiness, and success, our peace and prosperity.
