The study of Christian Science and the work of faithful...
The study of Christian Science and the work of faithful practitioners have brought me much good over a period of twenty-five years, for which I am very grateful. During that time there have been healings of colds, headaches, tonsillitis, sprained fingers, inflammatory rheumatism, profanity, and false traits of character. Through the help of a practitioner a' healing of influenza took place so quickly that I was away from work and confined in bed for only one day. Weak ankles that practically stopped all locomotion were healed in three weeks. A young man who had the cot next to mine in a military camp was healed of the fever and symptoms of the then prevalent influenza by my reading to him, at his request, from Science and Health. Within an hour he dropped off into a quiet rest and awoke in the morning well and ready to report for duty.
While I was in a university, philosophy and similar subjects overshadowed my understanding of the truth concerning man, and seemed to outweigh the teachings of Christian Science. This darkness continued for three or four years until the partial adherence to so-called intellectualism and worldliness brought on an abnormal condition—a growth, the size of a walnut, that was not painful but disfiguring and unsightly. Much study, prayer, humility, and the desire to uncover and overcome false thinking, were necessary to bring about this healing. The condition was recognized as mental, and it was soon fully realized that a surgeon's knife might remove the physical manifestation but would never be able to produce the mental healing that was necessary. "The sick are never really healed except by means of the divine power. Only the action of Truth, Life, and Love can give harmony" (Science and Health, p. 169). The only road open was the way of the Christ. During this time class instruction came, and that beautiful and elevating experience gave me more strength, courage, and assurance to keep on, until, with the casting out of false thinking, the physical manifestation disappeared.
It has always been a source of gratitude to me that Christian Science gives mental freedom and joy; that it is a study and a Science that we can use in everyday life, and I have found it uplifting, instructive, and beneficial.
