Spiritual Conversion

[Original article in German]

WHEN the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, received the revelation of God's allness, she gave this revelation to the world for its redemption from all ills, from sin, sickness, and death. Her motive was great and selfless love, the strength of which enabled her to write the blessed book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," to enlighten all who will lean "on the sustaining infinite" (Pref., p. vii). In this textbook her revolutionary discovery in the religious realm is set forth in a clear, readily understood form. Therefore it calls for a certain measure of impersonal, universal love on the part of the seeker for Truth, to understand spiritually the deeper meaning of the letter.

The Principle of Christian Science is Love. Since God is Love, the works accomplished through reflecting Love are "the sign of Immanuel, or 'God with us'" (Science and Health, Pref., p. xi). Reflected love is the door to understanding. It lets in the light of Truth, and thus brings about release from a false, material concept of life. Mere acquaintance with the letter of the Bible and of our Leader's writings is of little practical value to us, if the spirit of love is lacking. Christian Science heals the sick through the law of God, not through human intellect or wisdom.

God's law rests on the converse of the false appearances in mortal mind. Christ Jesus healed the sick, reclaimed the sinner, and raised the dead on the basis of Truth. He said, "Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."
