Even after I had seen and experienced some remarkable...
Even after I had seen and experienced some remarkable healings in Christian Science, some of which were instantaneous, I still doubted the efficacy of this Science in the case of an emergency, as, for instance, ptomaine poisoning, a disease which I had dreaded since early childhood. I searched the testimonies in the periodicals for a record of a healing of this nature, and when in the course of time I read of three different healings, all of which were accomplished very quickly, I felt quite sure that these cases could not have been severe.
So, like Job, "the thing which I greatly feared" came upon me. On page 417 of Science and Health our Leader writes, "Maintain the facts of Christian Science,—that Spirit is God, and therefore cannot be sick; that what is termed matter cannot be sick; that all causation is Mind, acting through spiritual law." I maintained these facts as far as I was able, but apparently with no success. About two o'clock in the morning my husband telephoned to a practitioner. Immediately work was begun and my fear was lessened, but the physical condition became very much worse and I seemed about to pass on; then I became conscious of the following thoughts which I saw must be true: The only thing that can pass away is matter. Matter cannot touch Spirit, and I am spiritual, not material. Then followed a period of semiconsciousness, but by one o'clock in the afternoon I was dressed and able to attend to my household duties. All suffering had gone, and although a sense of weakness remained, it was overcome, and the next day I was enjoying splendid health. This experience fully convinced me that Christian Science is equal to any emergency.
Three years ago, when all our visible income was suddenly stopped, these two lines from the Bible were a great comfort: "All things work together for good to them that love God;" and, "No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly." Through diligent study I saw that supply does not depend upon the physical operation of mills and factories, and that the source of supply, which is God, does not cease to exist. I learned that spiritual ideas supply every human need, and I can honestly say that this period of nearly four months was the happiest and most fearless of my life. There was no lack of the things needed.
