When I first went to a Christian Science church service...
When I first went to a Christian Science church service the happy faces so impressed me that when I was feeling the loss of a loved one I turned to Christian Science to seek comfort and happiness. In a short time I was able to prove some of its teachings. One of my first demonstrations was over lack. My salary seemed almost inadequate to meet the needs of my family, and I thought I could not afford to buy the textbook. I am grateful that we can borrow Mrs. Eddy's writings from the Christian Science Reading Rooms, but there came a time when I felt that the textbook was needed in our home. On the night I received my weekly check I went to a Reading Room and purchased a pocket edition of Science and Health, then to the landlord to pay the rent and to a grocery store for supplies. By that time I had so little money left I dared not think about it but kept repeating the verse from Matthew, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." When I reached home I told the children we had our textbook and would have to trust God for what we had to eat for the rest of the week. Before the week was over I had received sums of money from unexpected sources amounting to twice the cost of the book. In a short time I was able to get all of our Leader's writings, the Concordances, the Hymnal, subscribe to the periodicals, and take class instruction.
I am more grateful than I can say for these proofs of God's care. Among the physical healings we have had in our family are those of headaches, sore throat, sprained ankles, neuritis, childblains, and smallpox. When the children had smallpox they were out of quarantine and back in school in ten days. I have overcome the belief in altitude and have been protected from sickness and accident. I thank God every day for these blessings and for our Leader.
