Over twenty years ago, while residing in a foreign land, I gradually became ill and resorted to much medical treatment, but to no avail. As the racking cough continued to grow worse, it dawned on me that my greatest fear, entertained since boyhood, had come upon me—I was a victim of tuberculosis of the lungs. The doctors claimed that the high altitude might prove fatal at any time; hence we moved to Southern California. The first eight months here were spent in a foothill sanatorium, but without relief. In addition to the lung trouble I was suffering from a chronic stomach ailment, which caused intense suffering and for which a stomach tube was used daily. A great sense of discouragement came over me, for I felt I had tried the best and had failed, but my "extremity" proved to be "God's opportunity." A kindly neighbor took me to a Christian Science practitioner.

I cannot describe the first treatment. How wonderful it all seemed, the hope, the peace, the calm that came over me! The cough soon diminished, the stomach tube was thrown away, and once more I was able to eat solid food.

During these years I have recovered my voice, which to mortal sense was entirely gone; and from a physically weak and emaciated being, I have become a robust man. Spiritually, I have grown from a groping, doubting mortal who was constantly wondering where and what God really was, to one who is beginning to know God, and in a small measure has been able to prove our revered Leader's assurance that God is always available, and "a very present help in trouble."
