In the years that have followed my first healing in Christian Science...
In the years that have followed my first healing in Christian Science I have continued to grow more and more grateful. I have felt this gratitude not alone for the restoration to health and normal activity, but especially for the great truth that Mrs. Eddy has given to the world.
As a college student I pursued various subjects, such as philosophy and psychology, dealing with the realm of thought, hoping to find ultimate truth; but in every case I was disappointed by the admission of the instructors that, after all, we were working with theories and not proven facts. A few years later, when I was suffering from a nervous breakdown and incipient tuberculosis and the doctor's orders forced me to withdraw from active participation in the work and play of the world for several years' complete rest, I was thrown entirely on my own resources. Though I had been reared in a Protestant religion, I found no way to pray and no faith within myself that prayers would be answered. I began to reach out for some system of mental therapeutics, but remained scornful of what I supposed Christian Science to be. These systems afforded no satisfaction; and having to be away from my home and husband became, after two years of idleness, a keen punishment.
When there seemed to be no solution to our problem, we were led to visit a relative who was a Christian Scientist. I was so much impressed with the harmonious home life I found there that as soon as I had a moment alone I began to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and I immediately felt rebuked thereby, for suddenly my sickness seemed to consist solely in selfishness, self-will, and self-pity. These false states of thought were quickly found to be nothing when the powerful searchlight of Truth was turned upon them. When reading the words from Science and Health (p. 14), "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints," I knew that this was the truth which I had been longing to find. Two treatments from a Christian Science practitioner enabled me to return to my home and take up my normal household duties and recreations. I was most grateful for this quick physical healing; but as I have advanced in the understanding of Christian Science, its most wonderful aspect to me has been the potency of Truth to destroy fear, ignorance, and sin.
