In 1914, while visiting us, a relative brought to my attention...

In 1914, while visiting us, a relative brought to my attention the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had never heard of this book before, but from the very first I knew that it contained the truth about God for which I had been searching. In a short time I purchased a copy, and I have proved it to be a "pearl of great price."

All went well for some time, but as our loving Leader has written in Science and Health (p. 540), "The muddy river-bed must be stirred in order to purify the stream." This process had begun. I had been in poor health for eleven years, under the doctors' care most of the time, and had undergone a serious operation. Until I glimpsed the truth that God's creation is not and cannot be sick, I believed it was natural to be sick. One night I was awakened with pain in my side, and I could hardly breathe. My husband insisted on calling the family physician, which he was accustomed to do frequently for the same complaint; but this time I refused to take any medicine. I wanted to use what understanding I had gained of Christian Science. I had no extreme fear as formerly, and when morning came I wrote to my relative asking for help in Christian Science. Before she received the letter I was entirely healed. I likened it to Isaiah's statement, "And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear." This gave me courage and increased my faith in God's loving care and power.

I have also been healed of periodic sick headaches, blood poisoning in a thumb, sprained ankle, indigestion, and rheumatism. While I was quite young in Christian Science, two of our boys, a niece, and I were quarantined for severe cases of smallpox. No physician was employed; we depended wholly upon God. Sense-testimony seemed to say that Christian Science could not heal such cases and that the disease would prove fatal for the smaller boy and me; but Truth was the victor, and not a scar remained. In January, 1917, I was taken suddenly ill. A Christian Science practitioner was telephoned to for help, and a Science friend remained with me. As the family expressed much fear for my recovery, a doctor was called to diagnose the case, which he called double pneumonia. He advised that I be taken to a hospital, but I refused. In about two weeks I was up, attending to home duties, and went to church services as usual. Since then Christian Science has been my only help. Discords of many kinds have been replaced with harmony.
