Two letters in a recent issue of the Advertiser under the caption "Divine Healing" refer to the "blood atonement" as the basis of faith, and state that Christian Scientists deny this. May I say that Christian Scientists do believe in the atonement of Christ; in fact, it is the basis of Christian healing. If by "blood atonement," however, is meant the theory that God appeased His wrath on His innocent Son, Christian Scientists do not accept such teaching. Perhaps the misunderstanding could be removed by pointing out that "blood" is used figuratively for sacrifice. It is not the shedding of material blood which atones or reconciles man to God, but Jesus' voluntary sacrifice for humanity and consequent overcoming of death, which proved that man cannot be separated from God, Life. This is the practical atonement of Christian Science; the at-one-ment of God and the real man, which necessarily involves salvation and healing in its progressive realization.
