Only one whose information was obtained from unreliablo sources could have made statements such as those in the letter printed in the Shepherdstown Register concerning Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy. Therefore I appeal to your sense of fairness to print this letter in order that your readers may not have a wrong concept of this great religious Leader and the movement she founded to give to the world the teaching which has brought health and peace of mind to thousands of men and women throughout the world.
Among other things, the writer said that Christian Science is "purely a pagan cult," that it "denies the atonement of Jesus Christ, rejects God as our Father and creator;" that it is falsely called Christian Science; and he attempts to cast aspersions on the character of Mrs. Eddy by a slighting reference to her married life.
When one becomes a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, or of one of its authorized branches, he subscribes to the Tenets, six simple statements of the main points of the Christian Science doctrine, the first of which is: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life" (Science and Health, p. 497). On page 5 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" Mrs. Eddy has written, "The First Commandment of the Hebrew Decalogue, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me,' and the Golden Rule are the all-in-all of Christian Science." Christian Scientists love and worship the omnipresent and omnipotent God, and they acknowledge Him as the loving Father and the only creator of the universe, including man. This is the same God to whom Jesus said, "O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me."
