There are a great many reasons why I am grateful for...
There are a great many reasons why I am grateful for Christian Science. First of all it has been an ever present protection against illness. When I finally turned to the truth unreservedly, the country was in the midst of the so-called influenza epidemic of 1918. Previously I had never been able to withstand any epidemic, and in addition to this had several attacks of tonsillitis and grippe each winter, and frequent sick headaches. This time, in spite of the fact that the hospitals were overflowing, and a number of the girls in the dormitory in which I was then living, including my roommate, had to be taken care of by other students, I went through the experience untouched. This protection has continued, with very few exceptions, during the years since then. Sick headaches have been overcome, always very quickly, often instantaneously. I have had one attack of tonsillitis and although this seemed severe, the healing took place overnight.
Shortly after the epidemic I was faced with my first college examinations. Previous to this I had often received help in Christian Science during illnesses, but this time I was forced to take an active part in studying and applying it for myself. The feeling of peace and confidence, the understanding of God as Mind, the source of intelligence, that came to me was proof of His presence. It was only through reliance on this truth that I was able to complete my course. When I finished, a physical examination such as that required for entrance was necessary. I was told that it was almost impossible to believe that the two reports were of the same person. The first one showed extreme nervousness, weight far below normal, weak heart, and low vitality. The second showed none of these. During this time and since I have never missed more than a single occasional day from any activity because of illness.
Several years ago it was necessary to work for some time to overcome a succession of boils. They were intensely painful and at first did not yield to Christian Science treatment. It was only when I realized that the erroneous state of my thought—in this case an unusually bad temper—had to be healed first, that they disappeared. The boil then developing disappeared rapidly and there has never been another.
