My first experience with Christian Science was when...
My first experience with Christian Science was when some literature on the subject was placed in my hands on board an army transport leaving France, following the world war. This was a critical time in my life, for I had come to the conclusion that Christian teachings were not practical in a present-day business world; and I was about to discard any attempt to adhere to these teachings. From this first reading I learned that evil is unreal and material existence a myth. I saw that when one gains the spiritually scientific import of the teachings of Christ Jesus, one can practice them with good results. This correction of thought dispelled a disagreeable sense of seasickness, and I was free from this trouble for the remaining ten days of the trip, which included a storm through which I slept peacefully.
When I first tried to join the army I was rejected by the Marine Corps on account of being underweight flatchested, but was later accepted by the Air Service Mechanics. After studying Christian Science for some time I noticed that my chest had expanded to its normal size. For many years I rarely was free from colds, and following the advice of physicians seemed to have little effect except to increase this tendency; but when I learned that matter in and of itself cannot take cold, and that neither the cause nor the remedy lies in matter, I was better able to control the situation. Because of correct scientific thinking about man's true being, I have been almost free from these unpleasant conditions for the past twelve years.
It seemed best for me to avoid certain kinds of food on account of the trouble I believed they caused me; but one day, with the aid of a student of Christian Science, I was instantaneously lifted out of a sense of sickness and weakness into a sense of health and strength. Ever since that moment I have eaten these same foods without any discomfort. Some time ago I had to pass a physical examination for life insurance, and I was declared to be in excellent physical condition.
