The Upward Look

According to St. Luke's Gospel, Christ Jesus spoke of the days to come, when there should be seen "upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; ... men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth." And he said, "When these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh."

The conditions of fear and distress described by Jesus are somewhat similar to those experienced today in national affairs and in the present vast upheaval of world conditions. These conditions are the externalized thoughts of mortal mind, and if we would improve them we must improve our thoughts. We are tempted to look "after those things which are coming on the earth," and we generally find ourselves walking in the direction toward which we are looking. When we are walking in the midst of them, these things assume vast proportions, and we may feel afraid. Shall we not do well to lift our vision above this chaos and "see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory"? Should we not aim at following the example of Christ Jesus, who said, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me"?

How very different world conditions would be today if each one realized his individual responsibility for the thinking he brings to bear on the national and international situation! We are familiar with the old adage, "Take care of the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves." We might paraphrase this: Take care to think right thoughts, and issues will be rightly settled. We are sometimes inclined to believe that a single thought is insignificant; that what one person thinks is of little importance, and that it need not, therefore, be considered. A good thought is never insignificant, because it emanates from God and is therefore endowed with power. God expresses Himself through man. Then each time we admit a wrong thought we are losing an opportunity of bringing our lives more fully into unity with spiritual good.
