It is possible that your correspondent meant to acknowledge the evident affection and esteem in which Christian Scientists hold their Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, when he wrote, referring to Jesus: "His place has been filled for hundreds of thousands by Mrs. Eddy."

Nevertheless, in view of the misleading character of his statement, please permit me to give Mrs. Eddy's own answer, found in her writings (Pulpit and Press, pp. 74, 75), to the question, "Am I the second Christ?" It is, in part, as follows: "Even the question shocks me." She continues, "There was, is, and never can be but one God, one Christ, one Jesus of Nazareth. Whoever in any age expresses most of the spirit of Truth and Love, the Principle of God's idea, has most of the spirit of Christ, of that Mind which was in Christ Jesus." And she concludes: "But to think or speak of me in any manner as a Christ, is sacrilegious. Such a statement would not only be false, but the absolute antipode of Christian Science, and would savor more of heathenism than of my doctrines."
