Health and Healing

Under God's law of progress there is no halting place, and gratitude for the healing of disease should not be allowed to narrow one's sense of healing to this initial phase or hold one content in it, even for a day. To the student of the Science of infinite Mind, to the progressive Christian Scientist, healing signifies the surrender of the material sense of existence and the exchange of every temporal thought and feeling for that which is spiritual and everlasting. Divine Mind it is which destroys the belief in sin and brings to light the beauty of the divine nature. The power of Christ, Truth, reveals the harmony of spiritual being and in this way blots out of human thought whatever is a contradiction of spiritual perfection. It is essential, then, that one who would progress spiritually should yield at all points to this divine power and guard against the smallest tendency to resist or postpone obedience to it.

On page 116 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy enumerates seven spiritual states:"Wisdom, purity, spiritual understanding, spiritual power, love, health, holiness." Here we find health included and matter excluded—clear proof that health is spiritual, not material. All who are in search of health can find it in this holy company and rest assured that health is the impartation of Spirit, and spiritually secure. No fear ever has been or ever can be entertained regarding this one health. Christian Science practitioners do well when drawing the attention of every patient to this mighty and reassuring fact regarding the nature and availability of health. Entirely apart from anatomy, physiology, or heredity, is the glory of real health everlastingly represented in man. Man inherits by reflection the perfect health of God, eternal Mind, for the health of His countenance is the health of His image.

The Revelator speaks of "a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them." Before the omnipotence of Spirit, the "great white throne," every knee shall bow, every material delusion and godless fear be surrendered. Fear centers only upon the material sense of earth and heaven, and this sense must be relinquished. The alert Christian Scientist does not clog his spiritual progress through giving credence to hypothetical obstructions between man and the "great white throne"—Spirit's omnipotence and omnipresence. In the divinely mental consciousness of man there is no matter. To demonstrate this scientific fact calls for much purging of human thought, and this purgation is liberating and exalting. In "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 94) our Leader writes, "This purgation of divine mercy, destroying all error, leaves no flesh, no matter, to the mental consciousness." In this divine mercy there is no condemnation; there is but the insistent, tender call of divine Love to absolute purity of thought. This is man's condition, and Christian Science points the way of proving it in human experience.
