Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

Texas.

A few calls have been made on your Committee for original material by the editors of the state; such as short articles and items of a religious character. Two editors requested an article concerning our Sunday schools, both requests being complied with.

One interesting incident showing the leavening influence of the Lesson-Sermon reports of our services is seen in the following experience: A young lady called a Reading Room in one of our more important cities over the telephone and asked the librarian in charge as to the meaning of a certain passage of Scripture. She explained that she was a teacher in a Sunday school of a Protestant denomination of that city, and had been reading the Lesson-Sermon reports each week regularly, and had been so impressed with their Scriptural expositions that she felt sure we should be able to give her the explanation sought.

In one of the smaller cities, where we have as yet no recognized organization, a minister who is actively engaged in pastoral work spoke to one of the Christian Scientists residing there with respect to these excerpts, saying that he looked forward to and read them each Monday morning, finding much of interest and helpfulness therein.

The most important evidence of the good our Lesson-Sermon reports are accomplishing that has come to light this year is seen in the following narrative: A lady called on a Christian Scientist and asked help for her husband, who was ill. The husband received the needed healing, and the wife told the Scientist that she had been reading our Lesson-Sermon excerpts in the local newspaper, and they had aroused in her a desire to know more of Christian Science, and to have her husband healed thereby. In this same place it has been found that many people outside our ranks read the reports, and appreciate them.

One editor, in accepting a subscription to the Monitor on the exchange basis, stated that he would be very glad to have it "as an educational matter," and "as a model" to help him "to be a better editor." Another said that he wished to renew his subscription, because he "could not get along without The Christian Science Monitor." These remarks are typical of those made by newspaper men when arranging for exchange plan renewals or new subscriptions.

Nottinghamshire, England.

Twelve articles have been reprinted from the Monitor with due acknowledgment in each case. These have mainly appeared in the Mansfield press. This is a big advance on last year when only three appeared.

There have been reported three references to Christian Science made by clergymen of different denominations. In each case Christian Science was kindly mentioned, although the one reported in the press needed an enlightening reply.

One prominent Nottingham minister, preaching on the life of Mary Baker Eddy, began his sermon with the introduction: "Let us be clear at once as to the beauty and strength and enlightenment of the Christian Science teaching of the Bible which we need at this hour. We are all aware of friends of ours who have been definitely helped in this way.

"I should imagine there are thousands of men and women who were scattered and wandering who have through Christian Science become successful citizens and are now living in truth and God and been happier than they have ever been before."
