In the year 1926 my father passed on quite suddenly
In the year 1926 my father passed on quite suddenly. I had had trying experiences during the preceding years, and now it seemed as if the tension were too great. Six weeks after my father's passing I broke down completely, mentally and physically. In the belief that under the care of my mother and in the quiet of my parental home I should soon recover, my husband accompanied me home. I suffered mainly from severe pains in my head, chest, and stomach. But our hope was not confirmed, for my condition grew worse every day; I was almost delirious with pain. After about two weeks my mother noticed that my left side was quite lame; in addition I had almost entirely lost my speech and was unable to understand others. In every way my mother and my husband endeavored to relieve me, and thus six of the most able physicians of the town were consulted; but none of them could bring me any relief.
One day several weeks later, my mother gathered from my almost unintelligible words that she must get help, no matter how and from where. In her great fear she wandered about town and met an acquaintance who told her about Christian Science and offered to take her to a practitioner. On the way the met a practitioner, who came to see me at once. With great love and endless patience she came daily for some time to comfort me. Within three weeks the pain completely vanished. Although I was much improved, it was found that I could no longer walk, read, or write. For some time I had to be carried upstairs and downstairs. In short, I was completely helpless.
As treatment was continued by the practitioner we endeavored to grow into an understanding of Christian Science, but the error persisted, and finally brought us to the point where once more we turned to material aid. In November my husband accompanied me to a sanatorium. After five weeks there was not only no progress in evidence, but, on the contrary, it had been observed that I had had frequent relapses during that time. Two of the physicians at the sanatorium and a specialist from another town endeavored to have us consent to an operation on my head, in order that they might get some light on the mystery of my illness. Yet this time we withstood the renewed temptation and decided that I should leave the sanatorium. After an absence of four months I went home to my own city and had Christian Science treatment. A little later we finally reached the point of turning away from material aid altogether. It was not until then that, day by day, the error actually began to fall away from me. Today I am entirely well and in better health than ever before. Many minor troubles which, despite supposedly good care and attention, had refused to yield, all vanished gradually.
