Enlarging Our Treasures
In many a heart there lies hidden an unuttered yearning for better things. Christian Science tenderly nourishes this yearning through which dawns the recognition that man is not born of matter and evil, but of Spirit, of good, and that true destiny is nothing short of divine.
Paul speaks of "the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." These treasures, then, cannot be found elsewhere. True wisdom and knowledge cannot be dug from the sand of material conjecture, but each one can acquire spiritual treasures for himself as he discerns their source and character. It is the experience of Christian Scientists that as they mentally turn away from evil thoughts and reach out for a fuller understanding of divine Love, they manifest increasing dominion over sickness, moral weakness, and general inharmony. In the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" they find the way to heaven on earth. So is human thought touched and quickened by the Christ, the true idea of God.
Our Leader writes (Science and Health, p. 265), "Man understands spiritual existence in proportion as his treasures of Truth and Love are enlarged." The Christian Scientist's purpose is to progress daily in spiritual understanding and dominion. No student need submit to a meager share of knowledge and wisdom if he will but dig deep for the truth contained in the pages of the Bible and all our Leader's works on Christian Science. His whole endeavor should be to prove that his consciousness mirrors Godlikeness, and nothing else. To this end he should constantly dwell with rejoicing on the power and beauty of Mind's spiritual ideas and qualities, and rise above ignorance and false knowledge through his enlarging understanding and continuous utilization of Truth and Love.
