Musical Times

This new [Christian Science] hymnal is compiled for the use of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, at Boston, Massachusetts, and its branch churches throughout the world. It contains four hundred hymns and a Supplement of another twenty-nine. ... It is evident that a vast amount of expert work has been done to compile a collection of hymns not only suitable to the needs of the particular denomination, but of considerable value, literary, musical, and devotional, to all who are interested in Christian hymnology.

Men and women of musical and literary culture will find herein much that is of interest. ... The fastidious critic may find examples that come very near to the perfection of hymn writing—poems that show delicate artistic skill in the expression of inspired thought, set to music written with so fine a sense of structure, balance, and rhythmic fitness that words and music become the expression of one mind.

Those for whose use the book is intended, and all who are interested, will be grateful to the compilers for having included so many of the old and much loved hymns and tunes. They will be grateful, also, to find hymns of more recent date, and many tunes of great beauty, either to old words or new, by some of the most distinguished musicians of our time. The older classics are represented by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and by English composers such as Jeremiah Clark and Orlando Gibbons.
