The Real Status of Man
IN "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 470) our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says, "God is the creator of man, and, the divine Principle of man remaining perfect, the divine idea or reflection, man, remains perfect." Is not this a very comforting thought? Doubtless, many would like to believe that man "remains perfect," but if unacquainted with the teachings of Christian Science they may be unable to accept such a refutation of material sense testimony.
In daily contact with mankind we may be tempted to believe that man is very imperfect. He may seem to be sick, sinful, unhappy, irritable, limited, and selfish; and the testimony of false, material sense would substantiate this erroneous belief. Yet, however actual these discords may appear to be, they are untrue and unreal, and can be proved so through application of the truth; for Christian Science bases its statements of man's perfection upon the correct spiritual, Scientific account of creation recorded in the first chapter of Genesis, wherein man is stated to be the image and likeness of God.
Now, inasmuch as it is not reasonable for a Christian believer to advance the theory of or argue for the imperfection of God, one consequently cannot logically argue for the imperfection of that which expresses God, that is, man. Christian Science reveals God, the unchangeable, as the same Yesterday, today, and forever. Then His expression, man, must be in the same condition or status of perfection yesterday, today, and forever. This status is wholly spiritual, and must be perceived if we are to behold man as the spiritual idea or reflection of his Maker.
