My first introduction to Christian Science came as the...
My first introduction to Christian Science came as the result of a desire to know some means of obtaining greater happiness and mental peace. I had enjoyed good health, and had had a fairly good start in the business world through the opportunity to graduate from college and from a professional school. But all this did not make me happy. Sometimes I found myself efficient, and at other times I felt that my progress was more or less the result of chance. I desired to find some reliable rule in life that would bring happiness. Although there were times when I had faith in the existence of God, there were many instances when that belief was lacking.
Though opposed to what I thought Christian Science to be, I finally decided not to criticize it until I had at least read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. After reading the first chapter, on Prayer, I realized that I had at last had an introduction to the God for whom I had been searching. Among the many blessings that have come to me since I began the study of Christian Science are a better understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him, healings of cold, grippe, ivy poisoning, the smoking habit, and the wearing of glasses. I have also been helped in business problems.
I should like to relate just one demonstration which came to me very soon after I took up the study of Christian Science. I had been called upon to make a change in employment. One of the high executives in a large concern seemed interested in my services, but several of the officers of that company did not regard me favorably. As I had asked a Christian Science practitioner to help me in this problem, I again went to him immediately after I had been refused by the executive who had seemed, at first, to want me. After a conference with the practitioner, which included a treatment I returned to the executive with the thought of service clearly established, and was engaged at a salary higher than I had expected. My services proved to be helpful and satisfactory.
