Expressing Our Individuality

IN educational circles in these modern days we hear much about "expressing our individuality," which may mean anything from brusque bad manners to natural grace. Therefore, students of Christian Science have to examine this phrase in order not to be caught accepting the world's estimate of individuality.

"The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea, — perfect God and perfect man, — as the basis of thought and demonstration," writes Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 259); and it is from this basis that we should reason. Hence, when we are asked, or we ask ourselves, What is individuality? we cut through all the "ifs" and "buts" to grasp perfection, including the perfect ability to discern and express our God-given individuality.

Webster's Collegiate Dictionary defines "individuality," in part, as "oneness." To the student of Christian Science the only oneness is God's oneness, including man's unity with God, his Maker. This may be better appreciable to us when, after accepting the Christian Science definition of God as Mind, we see how impossible it is for Mind to be separated from its idea, man.
